1893
The silver panic of 1893 changed many mens' fortunes, including Clarence Montague's. After his real estate partner disappeared with their money, Clarence founded the American Clay Works & Supply. He manufactured red clay flower pots, ranging in size from 1" to 12", for use in greenhouses. He moved the company to its current location at 857 Bryant Street in1906. With his wife, Mary, and three sons Harley, Joseph, and Horace the company prospered.
1945
ACW was closed during WW II. until 1945 when Howard Montague, Clarence's grandson, reopened the factory. Soon he was joined by other members of the family. Fires and floods threatened ACW survival many times. The flood of 1965 created a new opportunity. An SBA loan helped to rebuild a small warehouse for distribution of greenhouse supplies.
1982

Distribution of a complete line of greenhouse, nursery, landscape and garden center supplies became the main focus of ACW. We replaced our manufacturing facility with a 37,000 sf. warehouse. We brought in experts in all areas of greenhouses and growing to serve our customers. Most of these people are still employed with us. We constantly draw on their experience and knowledge.

2008

This year brings new challenges and expectations. The management of Ron Eberly and R. Montague, great grandsons of Clarence, along with dedicated employees strive for the highest service levels. We provide our customers with the most up to date information on Greenhouse construction, retrofits, chemicals, fertilizers, containers, fans, heaters, controls and more! We Answer Your Questions!
