We had an update on the new container weights and measures regulations at our annual open house in August of this year. Based on the number of calls we received in September about this issue, there appears to be some concerns by growers and retailers. If you have any questions please call American Clay. We can help.
September also produced a lot of calls on plastic pricing. With all the coverage on the hurricanes, we can safely say prices are not coming down for the near future. What to do? If you know what you need for the 2006 season, buy it now. Our suppliers are geared up to put the appropriate weights & measures information on the containers, pots, hanging baskets and inserts. Most of the plastic resin manufacturing for our industry is along the Gulf Coast. How much capacity was disrupted? How long will it take to get any damaged fixed? When will resin manufacturing reach normal production flows? Will another hurricane hit this area? These are all questions that do not have a definite answer at this time. We know what pricing is if you can book now.
Don't forget your overwinter fabric. We have a good inventory of 15' x 300' 2oz / sq. yd. material on hand. This fabric is reusable, water permeable and UV resistant. This is an excellent fabric to cover perennials and shrubs for the winter. A winter application of fertilizer for some perennials, shrubs and trees is important. American Clay has a 17-3-6 ( SCU ) and a 18-5-10 ( IBDU ) top dress available. Warm winter days can cause stress on many plant species. A winter application of fertilizer with ample water will reduce this stress, resulting in less damage next spring. Call American Clay for more information.
