October 2007

Winter is just around the corner. As cooler weather sets in, plant protection becomes more important. Frost blanket is an excellent cover for perennials and some shrubs, remember you can water through this fabric; it is not necessary to remove the blanket. Frostgard comes in two weights, a 2oz sq ft and a 6oz per sq ft. Both rolls are 15’ x 300’ and in stock now. The other item is winter fertilization. Plants coming out of dormancy in December or January not only require water, but also require nutrition. American Clay stocks both a 17-3-6 SCU and an 18-5-10 IBDU. Both fertilizers are a top dress and carry about a 5 month residual feeding time. American Clay has both in stock.

There is still time to winterize your greenhouse to reduce stress on your heaters.   This is a step that will allow your heater to perform more efficiently and prolong the life of your heat exchanger.  Winterizing your greenhouse should be a priority and here are some helpful hints.  Use white polyfilm to seal the north end of the greenhouse.  This allows for heat reflection back into the greenhouse as well as providing an additional barrier to the cold.    Seal the inside of all exhaust fans you will not be using with white polyfilm.  This reduces the amount of cold air coming from the louvers.  Use horizontal air fans.  These fans keep warm air from rising, thus putting less demand on your heaters.  For more information on these procedures contact American Clay.

October is also a great month to prepare greenhouses for spring growing, especially the application of disinfectants. Zero-tol, Oxidate and Green Shield are excellent products for greenhouse cleaning. Many fungi overwinter in the spore form. These products kill these spores and with fewer or no host plants present to propagate the fungi, the spores are all that remain. You can really prevent serious fungal problems starting next spring.

Also, American Clay Works has made a special purchase of Valent Chemical’s Safari and we will be offering the 3 lb canisters for $300.00 while supplies last.  We also still have about 90 6” clay glazed pumpkins in stock we are closing out at $1.00 each.
