American Clay Works has been receiving numerous inquiries about bio-degradable containers. At our open house in August we mentioned several products that would fit the bill. These containers meet the criteria of “green” or bio-degradable. These containers must bio degrade in the ground or in a land fill. First, is the ITML Coir pot. This pot is made of 100% Coir fiber (coconut husk) and is available in a 4” Standard and 6” Azalea size. Both containers are made to fit existing carry trays produced by ITML.  The 4 standard is packed 2180 per case and the 6 azalea is 1080 per cs. Secondly, we have the Western Fiber pots which are made of recycled newspaper. When planted properly, these containers will biodegrade and are available in a number of sizes. Third, we have access to the Elle Pot, which is available in a number of sizes.  Last we have the Jiffy Pot, again available in number of sizes. For retail sales the Coir pot and the Western Fiber would be the best choice where Jiffy and Elle Pots are good choices for landscape plantings. In addition to containers we also have a complete line of biological fertilizers, soil amendments and chemicals, primarily fungicides and several fungus gnat insecticides, to compliment the container lines.

Our Colorado Grows campaign is going well, we have sold most of the first 100000 true quart pots and have reordered. We have also put the Colorado Grows label on a true 1 gl container, which will be available in February of 2008. Remember, the purchases of these containers sends money to both CFF and CNREF foundations. For More information on this program please visit coloradogrows.org.

Winter fertilization is an important aspect of over wintering nursery crops and perennials. We carry a 17-3-6 SCU and a 18-5-10 IBDU granulated fertilizer both with a 5-6 month release period. If the winter is mild, you will have to water.  When you water, roots are active and a small amount of fertilizer is necessary to promote and sustain plant growth. A recent study by Scotts Fertilizer Co showed winter fertilization reduced over wintering losses substantially. For more information please contact American Clay.
