Winter is coming soon and there is still time to winterize your greenhouses to reduce stress on your heaters. This step will allow your heaters to perform more efficiently and prolong the life of the heat exchanger. Use white polyfilm, 5mil or 3mil, to seal the north end of the greenhouse. This allows for heat reflection back into the structure as well as providing an additional barrier to the cold. Seal the inside of all exhaust fans you are not using with white polyfilm. This reduces the flow of colder air coming into the greenhouse. Use HAF fans when possible. These fans keep hot air from rising, which keeps warmer air at bench height, consequently putting less demand on the heaters. A simple check of your heaters and cleaning of the exchanger can save a significant amount of energy, which should be part of a heaters annual maintenance schedule. Also check the control unit with a separate thermometer to be sure it is operating properly. These simple steps will save on energy consumption and save a few dollars.

October is a good time to disinfect the greenhouse. Products like Zero-tol, Greenshield & Oxidate are excellent disinfectants for disease prevention. Fungi overwinter in spore form, and these products kill fungi spores and bacteria, which should result in fewer problems come spring. For more information call American Clay.
