Plastics and fertilizers, two major product lines that apply to our industry, appear to have stabilized in pricing, at least for the present. The insane price increases of this past summer and early fall have stopped. In conversations with the plastic manufacturers they expect prices to hold through early spring 2009. What happens next is “Crystal Ball Time”. Without any major world incidents, prices should begin to decrease probably in the second or third business quarter of 2009. Understand this is only speculation as we all know in this crazy world anything can happen and usually does. Fertilizer is a little different. Most of the increases are caused by global trading and demand for fertilizer components by other nations driving demand to exceed supply. Prices here have stabilized, but we are not in the growing season of the Northern Hemisphere. What happens over there effects us over. We will have a better idea on fertilizer pricing in January 2009. We certainly hope some of this insanity comes to an end after the presidential election. Maybe some market stabilization will reestablish in our economy and the global market.
